The Nollywood pioneer filmmaker has a lot to say about today's fake presenters:
Listening to some Nigerian radio stations can either leave one permanently befuddled or just plain angry all the time. The latter is what happens to me mostly, so I stopped listening to most radio stations for some time. The television stations are not any better. The cause of one's linear anguish is not hard to find. Confusing accents of the presenters!
Yes, one cannot really tell if the presenters on radio and television [in Nigeria these days] are from Miami, Manchester or Mushin or if they are just a bunch of clueless upstarts mouthing words which seem to make them happy but leaves the listener with a terrible 'earache'.Tracing the history of radio and television presentation in Nigeria, who can ever forget the glorious days and diction of Soni Irabor, Jim Lawson Madueke, Bimbo Oloyede, Tony Abolo, Donald Everedjo, Sienne All-Well Brown, Ruth Benemesia Opia, Lola Alakija, John Momoh, Silver Oforgu and so many other articulate and fantastic presenters who shaped the entertainment industry with their style and panache of presentation?
What these names have in common is a clear and distinct presentation style with a pleasant-sounding smattering of perfect Queens English and intonations, mixed with the distinct mother-tongue of the personalities ( if you will) . These guys made millions of people shape up their articulation. We wanted to talk like them, to present like them, in the very clear and African-tinged intonations they had. We loved them and still do.
Being a former colony of Britain, it was only natural that our Spoken English as citizens of Nigeria, had to be a bit uppity and middle class even when many of us were of a lower rung in the society ladder. But that helped many people aspire to change their destinies in their chosen fields.
Sadly, in the mid-nineties, the sweeping American culture crept into our mainstream radio and things changed, albeit horribly. Before we knew it, the 'Yo, Yo, Yo!' presenters hit the airwaves. Sounding very American ( and most times Ghetto Americanese too) became the fad. So, the beautiful accents we have as Africans just disappeared with the 'dash monkey banana' borrowed accents.
Almost every Presenter came on air sounding like poor imitations of Hollywood Black Gangsters or rap artistes. These days, you just have to strain your ears to hear anything they say on air. Words like 'alright' has given way to 'aight!' and so many examples. It's not so much the fake accents that pisses me off but the lack of a true identity by these presenters! Some are confused and don't even know if the accent they speak with are American or British or just a horrible cacophony of both. All these 'gonna, wanna, burra, berra' Presenters! Una nor go kill person.
I have visited South Africa a few times and one of the things I like about their Presenters on radio and television is the NATURALNESS. The Black South African Presenters don't attempt to hide their MOTHER-TONGUE accents with the English Language. In fact, it makes them so distinct and wonderful on air. I like Supersports Presenters on DSTV from SA like Thomas Mlambo and even the Ivorian Football Analyst ( can't remember his name now). You feel so at ease with them.
You hear them. (I must also commend Charles Anazodo and Praise and the female presenter on Supersports Nigeria. They are superb in their presentation). And that is not to say that we don't have presenters in Nigeria at present who are superb. We do have but they seem to be in a minority compared with the horde of fake-accented elephants who have assailed the Nigerian airwaves. Some of them have so perfected the art of 'forming' so well that they can't even pronounce Nigerian names at all on air!'Okoro Feeling Funky' jockeys! As Basket Mouth the comedian would say ,'Their Father!'
-- Hmmmm, this is quite instructive.

Sir, I really appreciate your observations, truly the so called white pple doesn't immitate us,bt we are really not proud of our heritage and our manners of speaking. Thank u so much sir,Maybe they will Learn from what u just said and adjust
ReplyDeleteMany in Lagos and Abuja are terrible with their stupid accents but I wont mention name cos most of them are from the South East so some people wont fight Olu and his blog.
ReplyDeleteLike it's said, "If it's not panadol.....". What's worse, they "murder" the English language with impunity, who ccares as long as there's enough. "Yo" and "Aiit" in it, right? Ignorant fools! I hope they're reading.....sorry, they can't read good english. Wasted, copy copy generation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the author of this article. It's so pathetic with this silly accent most of these presenters, musicians and actors speak. The other day I heard Jaywon saying "right 'bout now" and sounded so annoying. We are in diaspora are trying to speak very good English with using our accent and not copying the western accent and some people in Nigeria are just twisting their tongues. Let me state a fact here now, when a westerner hear a black man speaks fluent English with his natural accent, such westerner gives respect, regard and trust, but the moment you try and fake American or British accent, you loose your respect. Such annoying presenters are Tee A,Jaywon. Some good presenters are Teju babyface etc. Some of this accent are even hood street language.
ReplyDeleteThank God Almighty that one reasonable person is pointing this out to radio and tv presenter straight, the fact is we the listner always want to be abreast of the happening within the society we live but their fake borrowed accent pisses you off that you will feel as if to slam the reciever to the wall, I am most particular with one local and primitive presenter on Cool Fm kano, they call him Femi D, I always pick offences with anyone I know listening to that dude beecause of his jargons and the stupid way he twist his tongue each time he is on air. I advice that the managements of radio house and television studios should lay down rules and if its breached, punishment should be applied, I wish Femi will just read this.
ReplyDeleteI pray 1 of dem shud bite his/her tongue 1 day (kbk
ReplyDeleteolu are u sure this author is not looking for a job? let him go to the media houses & organise seminar for them nw so we can know how perfect he is
ReplyDeleteThis is a very good piece. As a child I loved every tin about presentation and worked on my oral English to produce queens English. But every dream of mine came crashing when I observed it was American English that was on board. I wish those presenters would read this. The accent is too fake please!
ReplyDeleteCharles Novia is an Old school. Critique who accepts nothing else in life, but absolutes. The only permanent thing in this world is CHANGE! The change that may not be acceptable to d older generation maybe perfectly fine with the youths of today.
ReplyDeleteEver since d beginning of d human race, nothing have ever remained d same.Nothing wrong in speaking with the queens english, but unfortunately,it does not arrogate to u d impunity of superiority over others. I live in D united states where Chinese ppl who can barely speak a word of English are multimillionaires. My Indian lecturers give me migraines when they talk, but fact is their intellectual qualification is unquestionable.
I read Charless Novias critique on poor Tonto Dikeh on facebook, calling her a bad actor! But here is a man who claims to be a movie director with no phenomenal accomplishment in d art of moving directing.Name one movie Charles Novia have directed that supports his directorial acclaim? None!! There is a seriuos phsychological import when a man is constantly critising with no input to d solution of his critique.
Take for instance the music we dance and listen today, such as "I go Chop Ur Money"If u played that kind of music in d early Eighties in a Nigerian club, they will chase d DJ out of the club.
Today lots of music with Nigerian language content is making waves! In those days it used to be African American stars who reigned in Night club music.Playing any music with Nigerian content was regarded as Bush.
Mr Novia as time goes by,there will be lots of things that may sound awful to u but perfectly acceptable to the larger society!
What that is simply telling u Mr Novia is that u r now old school and gravitating into a senior citizen status. If u want to spend ur old school days whining and wimping abt days gone by,then u will live it in misery. Be flexible, offer solutions rather than turning into an irritating professional critique,Who can't change anything! If u don't like d english used online when ppl chat, then stick to ur old school language while we "form" with our NERD english. Live with it Mr Novia or take a hike!!U have become sadly boring. Nigeria needs doers not professional criticisers like Mr Novia!!
I STRONGLY AGREE WITH YOU.I HAD AN ENTERTAINMENT SHOW SOMEWHERE(NAME WITHHELD, CHARLES WORKED UP TO ME AND CONDEMN WHAT I WAS DOING TELLING ME WHAT I SUPPOSE WOULD HAVE PLEASED HIM RATHER THAN HUNDRED OF PERSONS I HAD.
DeleteThis article is so true and hits the nail bang bang bang on the head. not only radio presenters, news presenters on tv, nollywood actors, ordinary nigerians, even those who claim to be educated.
ReplyDeletesome will tell you they gained first class degree in english language and when they speak, you will think a crayfish seller who has never been inside a classroom is speaking.
They make me cringe
Awesome dude! Grt write up!
ReplyDeletehow real is the writer with foreign dress? he shld have gone on babariga now. Colonial mentality.
ReplyDeleteUseless man with antequated old ideas!
ReplyDeleteCharles Novia is a useless man with a patholigical inferiority complex, who enjoys putting other ppl down to feel good abt his useless life! What is he known for? Absolutely nothing!! So,he does not matter!!
ReplyDeleteThis bini man wey dey yab,u nor see as ur gals dey do ashawo 4 italy? Why u nor dey talk abt dat one naa e come be phoneee be ur problem! Yeye man!!
ReplyDeleteDressed up in a white mans suit and talking bullshit abt presenters in Nigeria speaking with phoneee! Bloody hypochrite Mr Novia!
ReplyDeleteThis mental nut case Charles Novia will be d first to mess up our Radio presenters if they spoke say with a thick Yoruba,Igbo or Hausa accent. He would call them bush ppl!
ReplyDeleteSouth africans r not as polished as Nigerians. Using a grp of insular ppl like South Africans who just got their independence in d early Nineties as comparism is a fallacy!Without d presence of white ppl in their country, they wud have been savages.
A lot of nigerians were born in d US and Britain. If u throw into d mix,d wannabe Bintos who have never travelled out of Nigeria b4, then what u have shud not surprise Emperor Novia.
The presenters in this demographic r not reaching out to ppl in d old school like Charles Novia, they r closing up on younger, sharper, and youthful generation who understand their type of english and who r thank goodness, mostly their target audiences frm where they get their much cherished listenership numbers frm and not old Hags like Charles!!We can't always be like others, but we can burrow something frm others and blend it into our own UNIQUE form of presentation! Language is always evolving just like fashion or music. Where I live,if u wear a suit to a night club, right there we know u r a JJC!
The younger generation is not abt speaking in queens english, they r abt making money mr novia. Take ur low self esteem issues and take a sit in d corner and quietly jerk off, whinner!!!
This yeye man like to tell ppl what to do as naim own dem useless idiot!
ReplyDeleteLol eg stv people
ReplyDeleteSee charles novia mouth like kpomo!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely rubbish! What is worth doing is worth doing well. If you want to speak a language learn to do it the right way so that whichever part of the world you find yourself/travel to, you can blend with the reasonable standard of such a language. Imagine when an igboman or hausa person(s) speaks yoruba or a yoruba person(s0 trying to speak igbo language? What reactions do they get even in ngeria?
ReplyDeleteThat fallacy does not hold for chinese ppl in d US who speak their language with pride and still they r more productive and resourcful than black fools who r doing phonee!
ReplyDeleteI actuaLly thought that if u didn't speak queens english in US,ppl will laugh at u,but all that is ballooney!
Nigerians should emphasise grt skills and for those who cannot convey their brightness with polished english, they need not be put down! If u fake with ur phonee and u have no grt intellectual skills,u r just a plain loser!
This Charles Novia guy is a big asshole! Fuck!
ReplyDeleteOlufamous. Why didn't u publish my comment abt charles novia being a cheat and practices plagiarism.
ReplyDeleteU dey fear
