Christian Association of Nigeria in Serious Crisis; Catholics Pull Out

The crisis rocking the Christian Association of Nigeria worsened on Wednesday as the body told the Catholic Church to go ahead with its decision to pull out of the association.

The Catholic Church recently decided to pull out of CAN, alleging that the Christian body no longer stood for the objectives for which it was set up.

The Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Abeokuta, Monsignor Christopher Ajala, on Tuesday, alleged that CAN had become an arm of government.

But CAN blamed the Catholic’s action on the loss of the Presidency of CAN to Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor. The Public Relations Officer of the 19 Northern States of CAN and Abuja, Mr. Sunny Oibe, in an interview with journalists on Wednesday in Abuja also accused Catholics of arrogance.

He said, “There are some certain elements in the leadership of CAN led by Cardinal John Onaiyekan because he lost CAN Presidency to Oritsejafor who has a lot of achievements.

“There is no need for anybody to lose sleep over the threat by Catholics to pull out of CAN because without them CAN will still continue. The constitution of CAN makes provision that membership can be terminated by any group that is misbehaving or any group can also terminate their membership.

“Why is it that when Catholics were in the leadership of CAN, every bloc supported them, but now because power has changed hands, they are threatening to pull out and causing confusion?

“They have been agitating that the Presidency of CAN must come from the South. They at appendage of PDP and PDP themselves. They are known for double standards. A man of God should not be double speaking.”

Accordding to Oibe who is also the spokesperson for the President of Tarayar Ekklisiyar Kristi A Nijeriya, a conglomeration of 13 church groups in CAN, Catholics should not mislead the public even if they want to pull out.

He said, “The Catholics are claiming that the current CAN leadership has deviated from the vision of the founding fathers when they don’t even know how CAN came about.”

    1. My take on all this bruhaha in Christdom is that, we Christians have left the real enemy of the brethren(the liar- devil) and concentrating our spiritual and physical resources into fighting one another. This is why there are many fights even in churches worldwide. I mean, a pastor and his/her assistants fighting, leadership fight, women fight, choir fight, men fight, sunday school teachers fight. In all these,we should remember Rev 22:12 - And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

  5. C.A.N. is an Ecumenical Association attempting to bridge the gap bw the Church and the churches. The gap bw Catholicism & Protestantism may have been manageable if not for Pentecostalism, which is a world and religion of its own. If only Pentecostals would concentrate on their P.F.N and leave C.A.N alone. Bcs, their worldview and mission vis-a-vis Christianity is a total shift from that of Catholicism and mainline Protestantism. For instance, while all other member churches have their single representatives (e.g Cath., Anglican, Baptist, etc), Pentecostalism as a denomination has no rep. Instead, every Pentecostal member is representing his own private religious kingdom, operated with his private motives and doctrines, and under nobody's supervision. If u can't beat them,... them. 9. Gone are the days when men of God are genuine. Boko Haram sect has been killing Christians, yet CAN president has been busy celebrating in private jets, dining with the government and has refused to grief with the families of the victims of the sect. It is a pity that the church has delve into the politics which we all know is dirty. How can the CAN president fault the GEJ when the eat from the same dirty pot. It is true that the bible says touch not my anointed and do my prophet no harm, but i tell you most solemnly, not all men of God are anointed and are real prophets of God. I advice CAN president to deceit from our corrupt government and do that which God has assigned him to do and leave the quest for power and dirty money. No amount of charity is enough, use those money you are wasting on private jets to help the less privileged Christians. GentleObi

  11. This is one good news i have heard this promising year. CAN under the present leadership was nothing but political instrument in the hands of these murderer and corrupt politicians in Nigeria. CAN President was amongst the reasons why Boko Haram escalated and started killing christians. Many of my christian members are busy fooling themselves with that money monger call Orisejimoney and they been killed for their ignorance. And this is why my Bible tells me, `that when a blind man follows a blind man both will definitely fall into the pit`. Nigerians allow themselves too well to be fooled and brainwashed
by these politicians call leaders in the State affairs- tonto dee
