Niger Delta Militants in Violent Protest

The ever busy East/West road in the South-South region of Nigeria took a different shape today (Tuesday 6th September) as vehicular traffic was halted for about three hours while some former militants had a field day, protesting what they termed their non-inclusion in the amnesty programme.

The aggrieved youths blocked the Mbiama axis of the road as early as 5. 30am to prevent movement from Port-Harcourt to Delta State, as well as in and out of Bayelsa State.  A popular market in the area, the Mbiama Tuesday market, was also disrupted due to sporadic gun shots around the scene.

Those who were trapped in the chaos appeared helpless as non of them could approach the ex-militants. The spokesperson of the Joint Task Force, Timothy Antigha, confirmed the incident, adding that "our men have been sent their to handle it from escalating".

Star Editorial - Who Will Save Celebrity Marriages?

At a time when global moral values are on a rapid decline, it is not surprising that the nuclear family structure, and the conventional marriage institution, is greatly endangered. Marriages appear to be breaking up more than ever before. Single parenting is on a steady rise while the number of young people who are developing a phobia for marriage is alarming.

For those who get married, and indeed, the marriages that seem to ‘survive’, stories of trouble abound: married couples now cheat on each other with reckless abandon; the rate of spousal abuse is on the high; some of those who stay on do so for reasons other than those for which the marriage was contracted.

It is even worse for Celebrity marriages...

D’banj’s ‘Oliver Twist’ Not Banned

Don Jaddy and D'banj dancing away to the Oliver Twist song in their living room
Following a twit by controversial rapper, Ruggedman, alleging that one of the hottest urban music in Nigeria today, Oliver Twist by D’banj, has been banned by the Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation, not a few entertainment buffs have condemned the regulatory organisation for what they termed an insensitive action.

But it seems the last has not been heard on the matter. Below is a comment by the commission’s spokesperson on the issue:
We have no reason to ban any song that has no tendency to cause turmoil, crisis or affects the integrity of persons, individuals, groups or society at large. There are many other rules and regulations which govern airplays on Nigerian broadcasting media and as far as I am concerned the song has not breached any, and such reports indicating it was banned are untrue”.
You may wish to know that the ‘Oliver Twist Video Competition’ is still waxing stronger on the internet, with several groups and individuals sending entries... So, if the above quote is the true position, then one will be forced to ask: Where did Ruggedman got his information from in the first instance?

Six Killed, Ten Injured in Third Mainland Accident

No fewer than six persons on board a commercial bus lost their lives on Monday when it somersaulted on the Third Mainland, injuring about then others in the process. The accident, according to eyewitnesses, occurred about noon after the bus (a Mazda), which was on top speed, witnessed a burst tyre that led to the accident.

A policeman at the scene told journalists that the driver immediately lost control of the 18-seater bus which hit the pavement severally before it eventually somersaulted. It remained upturned with its tyres facing the sky for hours, leading to heavy traffic on the bridge, until the intervention of LATSMA officials who towed it away... May the souls of the departed rest in peace.

Samsung Galaxy Tablet Banned

The long awaited Galaxy Tab 7.7 gadget from electronics giant, Samsung, is not yet out but the product has already been banned from being sold in Germany.  It has also taken the tablet off the shelves in Berlin after a regional court granted Apple, its arch rival, a second injunction in their prolonged patent rights fight.

Although Samsung has promised to respect the court's decision, but it said the ruling is an infringement on consumers right to buy any product of their choice. Insider sources told the media that the company is already considering a legal battle to upturn the unfavorable injunctions.

The injunctions against the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 7.7 are temporary and could be lifted if Samsung were to win its case against Apple.

Devastating Wildfires Kill 2 in Texas

At least 5,000 people were forced from their homes in and over 400 admitted into emergency shelters when a roaring wildfire raced through rain-starved farmlands in Central Texas on Sunday, destroying about 500 homes.  The rapid advancement of the fire was fanned by howling winds from the remnants of 'Tropical Storm Lee'.

In an area called Gladewater, a 20-year-old woman and her 18-month-old daughter died when the fast-moving wildfire gutted their mobile home. Although the main fire was contained on Monday by resilient firefighters, several other blazes continued to burn in at least four other counties in Central and North Texas.

Officials remained uncertain as to how the blaze began, but it appeared that two fires merged "from nowhere" to form the wildfire... But what's happening to America? Its citizens are yet to recover from the devastation of the last hurricane, and now this one.
