D'Banj's Oliver Twist Track Banned by NBC

When Ruggedman first raised this issue through his twitter account, I didn't take it serious because I've not  heard anything that is so "bad" in the lyrics of D'banj's new track, Oliver Twist, to attract a ban from a body like the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, NBC. But it is no longer a romour, the story has been confirmed by Don Jazzy himself.

Below is Don Jazzy's reaction to the ban:
"Oh well they have banned it because they have the power to do so. Let’s see how they stop people from hearing it elsewhere. We’re not the first people they’ll ban and we’ll not be the last. When u flog a child at every chance you get, after a while the child would adjust and get used to the beatings... The person that banned this song will hear this song till he is sick of it. He will hear it at almost every party he goes to. He will hum the melody even in his sleep... He is doing his job so let’s allow him exercise his power. It’s allowed. May God bless him and his hustle. No long thing."

But this NBC sef, that was how they shutdown AIT when the station helped Nigerians to locate the site of one the past plane crash, claiming that the coverage was unprofessional.

Akin Omotoso To Premier "Man On Ground" at the Toronto International Film Festival this September

According to the story: In May of 2008, in the informal settlement of the East Rand near Johannesburg, Mozambican immigrant, Ernesto Nhamuave, was burned alive while bystanders laughed. The violence eventually quieted down, but its root causes are yet to be addressed seriously; tension is still tangible. The event inspired director, Akin Omotoso, to write Man On Ground, and the resulting film is, in Omotoso’s own words, “a strong appeal for healing.”

Man On Ground has been selected to have its world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival.  It will be showcased in the Contemporary World Cinema category and will be screened on the 12th, 13th and 17th of September, 2011... I hear the movie will be coming to cinemas in Nigeria pretty soon, will keep you guys posted as usual.

Police Arrests Hollywood Star, Daryl Hannah, for Protesting Outside the White House

For spear-heading a protest against a planned stretch of oil pipeline from the United States to Canada in front of the White House, Hollywood star, Daryl Hannah, has been arrested by the Police. She was taken into custody along with other environmental-right activists.

The 50-year-old Splash star and her group are clamouring for clean energy investments rather than the prevailing dependence on fossil fuels. She told newsmen that her group intend using the rally to advise President Barack Obama against bowing to oil lobbyists in the US.

Recall that this is not the first time Daryl Hannah will be arrested over environmental-related causes. In fact, she’s known to live “off the grip” by generating her own electricity and water. All her cars run on leftover grease from fast-food outlets, she even has a compost toilet... Instead of arrestign her, I think they should listen to her cause.  This woman is one of the few activists I've seen who do practice what they are preaching.

Nigeria to Generate 15,000 Megawatts of Electricity

Power generation in Nigeria will increase to 15,000MW by 2015, amounting to an increase of about 275 percent if compared to the current 4,000MW. This assertion was made by Prof. Bart Nnaji, Minister of Power, at an energy conference in Lagos.

He told Nigerians that the federal government has also approved the building of a Super Grid transmission infrastructure, which, according to him, would make Nigeria one of the few countries in the world to have such state-of-the-art facility.

But to generate over 40,000MW by 2020 as obtainable in South Africa, Prof. Nnaji said Nigeria would need to invest an average of $10bn in the power sector annually for the next 10 years. He quickly added that government do not have such money and that the private sector should invest.

If you ask me, from all indications, it seems the minister is trying to play a smart one on Nigerians so that he can shift blames to the private sector for not investing enough if, by the end of this administration, Nigeria’s epileptic power situation is not addressed... I just hope that’s not his game plan.

Policeman Brutalised Innocent Nigerian Over his Wife’s Refusal to Accept Sexual Advances

With an injury at the back of his head and bruises on his body, Afolabi Ojediran cut the picture of a man who was attacked by hoodlums. But he was not. Rather, he was beaten up by a riot policeman and a soldier.

He was not only beaten, his clothes were torn and he was detained for two days at the Ikotun Police Divisional Headquarters, Lagos. To compound his woes, his niece and her children were arrested and detained, including an eight-month-old baby. He was told to cough up N25,000 before he could be released.

Punch Metro gathered that Ojediran’s predicament was as a result of a friction between the policeman, who was later identified simply as Vincent and Ojediran’s wife, Florence. It was learnt that Vincent had been making sexual advances to Florence but had been turned down on several occasions which caused the friction between the two.

Things however reached the peak on Saturday, when Vincent dragged Ojediran into the problem...

United States Supports Nigeria’s Stand on Libya

The federal government has been applauded by the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Terrence McCulley, for her decision to recognise the rebel-led National Transitional Council (NTC) as the legitimate government in Libya, saying Nigeria’s decision was apt for the speedy development of the war-torn country.

With regard to Nigeria’s decision, we rather salute its decision. It has established itself on the continent and as a member of the UN Security Council, its decision which came quickly was the right one and we salute its leadership,” Mr. McCulley told thisday.

So far, reactions are sharply divided over what critics have termed “Nigeria’s hasty recognition of Libyan rebels”, since the African Union was yet to take an official position.
