Airtel Sacks 3,000 Nigerians Over Salary Dispute

While Nigerians were busy on how to celebrate the nation's 51st Independence Anniversary last week, Airtel, one of the major Telecoms company in the country, had entirely different plans. The company which is now owned by Indians sacked about 3,000 Nigerians on its payroll on Friday - all members of the customer service department.

Sources say the sack was as a result of salary dispute between the company's management and staff. Before now, the customer care staff were being paid N65,000 monthly, but the new management slashed the salary to N35,000. Their reason is that customer care workers in India are paid $200, and that only managers earn as much as N75,000 per month. Hence, they could not pay "mere" customer care agents as much as what an Airtel manager earns in India.

The latest now is that if you call Airtel customer care centre, it will be picked by somebody  in Ghana and the only languages available to customers are English and Pidgin... Airtel is however denying the news.

Actress Lilian Bach Lambasts Silverbird Management

Nigerian actress and producer, Lilian Bach, is very bitter with the management of Silverbird Cinemas over what she termed the lackadaisical approach of the organisation towards Nigerian films. She poured out her mind over the weekend at the Abuja Film Festival.

On Sunday, her latest movie - ‘Eletan’, a Yoruba film subtitled in English - starts showing at Silverbird cinemas in Abuja. But to her surprise, Silverbird did not put up the promotional materials and the film was not even listed as part of the films showing in the cinemas a day before. “The posters just arrived this morning... It was sent in from Lagos since and no one from the cinema went to pick them and even the tapes; and people are supposed to be seeing this film by 15.30,” she complained.

But the worst happened when she went inside the hall to see how her movie was doing, but was greatly shocked to discover that...

Ibo Man Sets His Pregnant Wife and Sons Ablaze

Alexander Ndubuisi Egeonu, a record seller in Enugu city, is currently on the run after he set ablaze members of his family made up of his pregnant wife and two sons aged between two and three years. What on heart could make a sane man to perpetrate such evil against his own family?

According to eyewitnesses, on arrival at his shop where he sells musical records and Compact Discs, Alexander asked his wife to escort him to the filling station to buy fuel. Thinking that the fuel was meant for their generator, the wife consented. Shortly after they returned to the shop, Alexander went to a neighbour’s shop and started dragging the owner (a woman), claiming that she was indebted to him. The ‘surprised’ woman screamed aloud to attract neighbours and passersby who helped rescued her from him.

After the disgrace at his neighbours shop, Alexander returned to his shop the second time..

Boko Haram Celebrates Victory, Gives Condition for Peace

Members of the now dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, on Sunday celebrated the inability of the Nigerian State to celebrate the nation’s 51st independence anniversary at the usual venue - Eagle Square - owing to threats by them and MEND, that bombs will be used freely in the nation’s capital if the celebration was carried out.

Confirming that the fear of Boko Haram is now the beginning of wisdom, an insider security source said: “We have not rested since last Thursday and there is no indication that we would rest soon because we may be deceived that they have had a change of mind to attack. So the security cordons will go on until we are satisfied the risk threats have reduced”. Meanwhile, spokesman of Boko Haram, Abu Qaqa, in an email message sent to newsmen on Sunday boosted that “the country would not have peace until...
