Nigerian actress and producer, Lilian Bach, is very bitter with the management of Silverbird Cinemas over what she termed the lackadaisical approach of the organisation towards Nigerian films. She poured out her mind over the weekend at the Abuja Film Festival.
On Sunday, her latest movie - ‘Eletan’, a Yoruba film subtitled in English - starts showing at Silverbird cinemas in Abuja. But to her surprise, Silverbird did not put up the promotional materials and the film was not even listed as part of the films showing in the cinemas a day before. “The posters just arrived this morning... It was sent in from Lagos since and no one from the cinema went to pick them and even the tapes; and people are supposed to be seeing this film by 15.30,” she complained.
But the worst happened when she went inside the hall to see how her movie was doing, but was greatly shocked to discover that...
the hall was empty. This made her to lament further, “I know how much I made this film. I know how much I spent during the premiere. And I know the pain I’ve been going through promoting this film and what will happen after two weeks? Silverbird will yank the movie off the list and say it was a flop because it is a Yoruba film. This has to stop! They are not even interested in making it a success, as per putting up the promotional materials when they are supposed to let people know that such film is being shown here.”
Following the nasty experience, the babe is already considering quitting film business. In her words: “I stayed at the back for 5 years. Maybe I should invest my money somewhere else, because I am not interested in making films that won’t be shown in the cinemas. The cinemas are not helping us at all.”
Eletan is a tale of a woman’s desperation, greed, and deception and how these vices eventually snowball into a disaster for her. The movie parades an all-star cast, which includes Lilian Bach, Yemi Blaq, Mr. Latin, Baba Wande, Ayo Badmus, Muyiwa Adegoke and others.

If this is true then they should also stop given stupid Movies, Producers, Director Award including the stupid Script writers.I know it takes a lot to sit & write & acting takes alot even when u pour your all into it. Shooting is another thing ETC.
ReplyDeleteBut this has to stop where you produce a stage play using various location & you end up calling it A MOVIE.
If you watch most of the movies in Nigeira you will see how the Actors & Actresses tries as much as possible not to back the camera. Not to talk of the wrong translation of words. That is suppose to be ONLY ON STAGE where you dont back your Audience. I even wonder if we have Movie critic in this country....
Until then thumbs up for silver bird.....
Yes...Lilian is right...
ReplyDeleteSilver bird are just promoting cultural imperialism in Nigeria.
I thought the Nigeria movie/entertainment industry have the "local content chatter"?
But these guys who should use their stables to promote Nigeria culturally, politically and socially are ending up subverting our drives towards self-liberation and social emancipation.
Too bad for Ben Bruce and his crew!
