DSTV Office Shut Down Over Tax Default

The head office of MultiChoice Nigeria, owners of DSTV Cable Television, was on Tuesday shut down by the Lagos State government over unremitted tax amounting to about N150 million. The office was sealed off by officials of the state Internal Revenue Service, after the organisation failed to remit the money to the government.

Special Adviser to Governor Babatunde Fashola on taxation and revenue, Bola Shodipo, while confirming the closure stated that the action was carried out to compel MultiChoice to fulfil its obligation to the government. He expressed displeasure at the rate of indebtedness in taxes of organisations in the state, adding that such practices are undermining the efforts of government.

A reliable source hinted that discussions are ongoing between both parties, and this might lead to an early re-opening of the office... DSTV please go and pay your tax, you people don't waste time to disconnect me whenever my subscription expires, so lead by example.

Tonto Dike Banned From Acting in Ghana

Unless controversial sexy Nollywood actress, Tonto Dike, becomes remorseful and tender an apology to top Ghanaian actor, Van Vicker, for ‘insulting’ him at a movie location, she can no longer ply her trade in Ghana. This is the position of Ghanaian movie Directors, who have also threatened a disciplinary measure against any Director who flouts the directive.

They reasoned that Van Vicker is a highly respected Ghanaian actor who should be respected by all artistes both home and abroad, adding that they will not tolerate such insolence from Tonto. One of them was even quoted as querying whether she can insult the likes of RMD in such manner.

I heard they are putting together a strongly worded letter to be forwarded to the Directors Guild of Nigeria, to formerly register their displeasure with the actress' improper conduct... Tonto has so far not responded to their request, and those who know her ways are of the opinion that it is unlikely that she would apologize, considering her past antecedents.

200 Nigerians Being Held Hostage by Libyan Rebels

The seeming crackdown on Africans in Libya - Nigerians in particular - continued on Tuesday, with the arrest of another 25 by the rebel-controlled Transitional National Council. According to a report monitored on The Nation, the development has brought the total number of Nigerians in their illegal detention camp to 200.

On Wednesday, there were increased fears by some Nigerians in Libya that those arrested may be killed by the rebels, if the federal government does not intervene early enough. A spokesman for trapped Nigerians in Tripoli, Mr. Daramola Siji, disclosed that those arrested are being detained in an area called Salahdin in the capital city. "We have no access to them at all," he added.

With all these injustice being meted out to our brothers and sisters in Tripoli, one is forced to wonder if the presidency through the ministry of foreign affairs is still sympathetic to the Rebels' cause?

65 Years Old Bedridden Woman Walks After 11 Years

Madam Margaret, a 65-year old Nigerian woman who suffered severe rheumatoid arthritis and had not walked for the last 11 years, is now walking again. Thanks to some Indian doctors who performed three separate surgeries on her to correct the anomaly.

Narrating her ordeal in the past, Madam Margaret said: "My fingers were so swollen, I could not even brush my teeth, my grand daughter used to help me. I couldn't stand up, couldn't walk. I couldn't go to the church. My daughter used to help me wash. My cook would feed me. And I was in great pain. I used to cry day and night".

But all that has now become history after she was flown to a private hospital in India for the complex surgeries. Sources at the hospital disclosed that she would be fit to fly back to Nigeria and begin a new life after regular physiotherapy for the next few weeks... Good for her that she didn't make the "mistake" to be treated here in Nigeria, maybe it would have been a different story; no light, poor medical equipment, poorly remunerated doctors, etc.

Nigerians Should Learn to Live with Boko Haram

If the statement credited to the head of Nigeria's intelligence apparatus, Gen. Andrew Owoye Azazi, is the true position of things in our country, then we all must brace up to the challenge and begin a process of device unconventional means of protecting ourselves and loved ones in both private and public places.

In case you haven't heard, the NSA was quoted as saying that himself and all those saddled with the responsibility of securing the lives and property of citizens of this country where "caught unawares" by the tactics employed by the Boko Haram sect.  According to Vanguard, he even declared that terrorism has come to stay in Nigeria.

In related development, the SSS on Tuesday in Suleja town uncovered the building used by members of the sect to manufacture the explosives with which they've been tormenting Nigerians. Six suspects have been arrested so far, and will be appearing in court soon.
