Nigerian Woman Kills Her Son With Rat Poison

"I picked my son, Ishaya, on the 23 of January, 2008 from Biu to to Azare but since I had not informed my husband who was against my son staying with us, I was afraid of taking him home. So, I had to buy N20 rat poison and matches and I took my son into the bush and gave him the poison and watched him die after 30 minutes. Then, I used his cloth and some dry grasses to burn his face and body so that he could not be traced to me."

Those were the confessional statement of Rebecca Emmanuel, who has just been sentenced to death by hanging for taking the life of her own son. She committed the nefarious act because her new husband warned her not to bring the child to his home. So, she had to kill him in order to avoid his wrath. But she could not keep the crime secret as she went and revealed it to her father who, in turn, called in the police.

Delivering judgement on the matter, Justice Pindar Haruna of the Maiduguri High Court said: “I wish I can temper justice with mercy; but I can’t; my hands are tied. Consequently, the convict is hereby sentenced to death. And she shall die by hanging.”

The judge further reasoned that the accused person’s confessional statement, and the fact that her son was last seen with her, are enough grounds to convict her, in accordance with Section 27 Subsection 1 and 2 of the Evidence Act... The judgement awaits the ratification of the state governor.

Boko Haram Forces NYSC to Cancel Passing-Out Parade

As part of measures to forestall further attacks against corps members by the dreaded Boko Haram sect and other anti-state elements, authorities of the National Youth Service Corps have cancelled the 2010 Batch III passing-out parade slated for October 4. The DG of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Nnamdi Okore-Affia, who confirmed the development to journalists in Abuja on Friday, explained that he was determined to take every necessary step to protect corps members throughout the country.

In his words: “You are aware that the Independence celebration is low-keyed. We will follow suit and have the passing out low-keyed as a means of ensuring the security of all our corps members. Some areas may not be conducive for congregating at this time.”

He disclosed that he was setting up a 24-hour Distress Call Centre, with a view to improving the security of all members and would be employed to maximum effects in rapid response. “At the point of registration, each corps member would be required to provide a functional phone number which officials of the scheme at the state level would send to the headquarters along with the place of primary assignment to create the data base,” he added.

The NYSC boss however rejected calls by concerned Nigerians to post corps members to sates close to their homes. He said such a step would further polarize the nation and defeat the objectives of the scheme which is to strengthen the bond of brotherliness among Nigeria’s various ethnic nationalities.

Lets Celebrate With Buchi's 'The Land Is Good'

Hey guys, it's Nigeria's 51st independence anniversary and it sure calls for some measure of celebrations. Even though Boko Haram and MEND have forced government to 'mend' activities marking the occasion, you and I still deserve something as good as Brother Buchi's soul lifting song to calm frayed nerves... Enjoy!

Celebrating Funke Akindele in a 'Swaggerlicious' Style

I watched an interesting programme (Bimbo & Shola Connect) last weekend on LTV where Funke was singled out for celebration by the likes of Tunde Kelani, Kunle Coker, Ireti Osayemi, among others. The babe was given the 'special' treatment in recognition of her strides in the movie industry thus far.

So therefore, by virtue of the powers conferred on me as Chairman of this blog-sphere, I urge you all readers of Olu Famous Blog to adopt this bigz girlz as celebrity of the month. Show her some love!... By the way, her movie - 'The Return of Jenifar' - premieres at the Muson Center and simultaneously in cinemas in Lagos and Abuja on Friday, 7th October.

Battle of Supremacy: Daughter-in-Law VS Mother-in-Law

I believe the story of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is not new to anyone in our society. I can’t say what this relationship is like outside Nigeria, but I am going to write from the Nigerian perspective. We all know that it is always difficult for two women to dwell together and live under the same roof in unity. It doesn’t matter how closely related they are, the truth is that even twins are not left out. I don’t know why this is happening and I don’t know when it is going to end, but as the male folks always say, women are their own worst enemies.

This battle among women gets hotter when a man decides to bring another woman home to become his flesh and body. A man is first his mother’s son and as it is said, no matter your age, you remain a child to your mother. Some mothers find it difficult to accept the fact that their son or daughter has grown and should be allowed some independence.

I have taken time to critically look at this issue because of the problems women are having in their relationships? Why is it that our men don’t have this same issue with their mothers-in-law? I have also wondered why fathers-in-law don’t always have issues with either the son or daughter -in-law. Isn’t this the same case of women being their own enemies? I had this as a post on my Facebook wall sometime ago and from the reactions, I could see that this is a very big problem that may need a very long time to be sorted out.  As you know...
