Robbers Raid Hospital, Cart Away Patients’ Money

Men of the underworld last week robbed patients and their relatives at gunpoint inside the Ogun State General Hospital in Abeokuta. The hoodlums subjected in-patients to torture and carted away their money and other valuables. In the process, a 75 years old patient simply identified as Odeyemi, who was said to have high blood pressure, died out of apprehension.

In a commando-style, the robbers moved round the wards, ordering hapless patients to surrender all valuables in their possession or lose their lives. They reportedly gained access into the premises by pretending they brought some patients on emergency, disarmed the security men and chained them while the operation lasted.

I heard the police are currently on the trail of the hoodlums... Nevertheless, the level of poverty in this country is really driving her youths crazy. How else can one explain a situation where disgruntled youths now resort to robbing a hospital, of all places?

One of Nigeria’s Celebrated Female Carpenter

Enugu State-born Mrs. Ngozi Aniobi is a female carpenter in Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi State. Her works continue to win her more customers and accolades because of the high quality of furniture she produces. When she’s at her workshop along Bakin Kura Street, you can’t miss the dexterity and uncanny passion she exhumes. She saws, drills, chisels and polishes pieces of furniture to the admiration of passersby.

Four the past 11 years, Mrs. Aniobi has successfully run and sustained the furniture business - Liberty Furniture - started by her late husband in 1980. “The secret is hard work and God. Even sand paper, the commonest work in furniture, I must supervise to make sure it is okay or up to my taste. It was not easy at the beginning, but with God, all things are possible,” she told a reporter recently.

As a mark of recognition, the National Youth Organisation recently awarded her outfit the ‘Best Furniture Company in Bauchi State’. The widow and mother of four is the only known female carpenter in the state.

Female Lecturer Fired for Having Sex with Students

The 38-year-old head of public administration department at the Medgar Evers College, Dr. Zulema Blair, has been relieved of her position and sent parking from the institution for allegedly sleeping with multiple students on campus. According to an incriminating anonymous email sent to the president of the College, she was also accused to have gotten pregnant for one of the students.

But the black female lecturer has denied the allegations and had even gone to court to claim damages. In a suit filed at the Manhattan Supreme Court, Mrs. Blair is asking that IT giant, Yahoo, be compelled to reveal the identity of the sender of the anonymous email whose address is: [email protected]. She said: “This is character assassination. This does not speak of any work or any of my accomplishments at Medgar Evers College... and I want whoever sent this out to be punished.”

The email mentioned a specific student (names withheld) who Mrs. Blair met at a Black Male Initiative event in 2006 as one of the boys, but she argued that her relationship with him is “always” professional... The trial date is yet to be made public.

Jonathan Set to Tackle Jos Crisis

Speaking about the lingering crisis in Jos on Monday during the Presidential Media Chat, President Goodluck Jonathan said the crisis was essentially a sectarian one that is continuously being fanned by religious sentiments and that efforts are in top gear to address it once and for all.

He rejected calls for the proclamation of state of emergency in the state, saying that is not the solution. In his words: “The crisis in Jos is over eleven years. The Plateau issue is not caused by religion, but religion is the fire that increases the problem. We are working on how to end it. During the time of President Olusegun Obasanjo, a state of emergency was declared, but it did not solve the problem. For there to be peace in Jos, the people must agree that they want peace.”

He has however given the Chief of Defence Staff, Oluseyi Petirin, a matching order to move into the state and tackle the crisis headlong, with a view to bringing it to an end.

14 Teenage Sex Workers in Police Custody

Fourteen young girls between the ages of 13 and 20 are right now eating beans and Ijebu garri in police custody in the Akute area of Ogun State, after they were arrested during a raid on a brothel that also serves as hideout for criminal elements.

But it was later discovered that the teenagers were forced into the dirty business by a cartel. As a result, the police is now making arrangements to hand them over to the agency in-charge of human trafficking in Nigeria.

While addressing newsmen the spokesman for the State Police Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said: “The policemen attached to Ajuwon Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, carried out a raid on the brothel... Upon enquiries, this brothel has been harbouring hoodlums, who terrorise the area.”

I also gathered that the owners of the brothel are currently undergoing interrogation at the police station.

Price of Rice Will Increase from Next Month

If you are one of those who 'like wice' as one of my friend would say, then you better start stock-pilling the commodity because in the next three weeks things might take a new turn in the area of pricing. This is so because the government of Thailand, the world's largest exporter of rice, has concluded plans to pay its rice growers far above market rates in a bid to keep more of the staple food for her citizens.

This move, according to the Associated Press (AP), is expected to push up prices effective October. “Thailand's rice exporters say they will ship less overseas because they will be unable to compete with the price the government pays. That in turn will tighten the global rice market, forcing up the staple's price in other countries,” AP added.

But when will Nigeria ever become self-sufficient in food production? Benue State, is the 'food basket of the nation' a mere slogan?
