Gowon Lambasts Achebe; Says His Book Was Written Out of Ignorance

"What role did Achebe play in the secessionist plans? Achebe must have been outside the country during the war and probably did not know what happened during the period otherwise he would not have written on what he was not sure of ".

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has criticized renowned author, Professor Chinua Achebe, over his new book on the Nigerian civil war, saying Achebe does not know the facts of the issue he was writing about.

Gowon said he was ready to face the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague on the matter if necessary.

“In fact , if there was no secession by the south eastern part of the country, there would have been no civil war because right from the beginning of the crises, the war would have been averted if not for the secession . It was something I believed we could have stopped,” he stressed.

Gowon also debunked the claim by the author that his administration embarked on the mass killing of Igbo, adding that the federal troops did not also use hunger as a weapon to dislodge the dissidents.

“It was the Igbo that objected to the creation of corridor for movements of medical aid and food supplies to the civilian population at the period. On this, I am ready to face the International Criminal Court of Justice at the Hague for prosecution over the role played by me during the war and, fortunately, some Nigerians are still alive to bear witness to the roles played by both the leadership of the secessionist group and the then Federal Military Government under my leadership," Gowon stressed

Gowon also revealed that during the war, a ship named “Josina” and owned by the secessionist group, which they claimed was carrying agricultural implements, was captured by federal troops and when it was subjected to a thorough search, the cargo turned out to be a collection of arms and ammunition.

The erstwhile Nigerian leader, was answering questions from journalists when he visited Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu at the Presidential Lodge, Minna, Niger state, on Saturday.

  1. Its about time Gowon wrote a book abt his role during d war! What did he know abt d killing of his boss Ironsi by Danjuma! Why did the federal govt leave ppl of igbo origin to be slaughtered like goats despite assurances frm Gowon that they will be given protection?
Gowon himsel admitted in another interview that under the circumstances he was foisted into power,he was fearful for his life! A leader who was fearful for his own life had absolutely no control over the anarchy that existed b4 d igbos finally decided to move back home and declared their independence! Nigeria did not want to leave the Biafrans alone cos that means they wud control d oil money! They decided to invad biafra to force them to be part of nigeria. Achebe was perfectly right in his narration of what happened during the war! Gowon is in a better position to give his own account of the civil war since he was a big player during that crisis.

MUST BE CANNONISED A SAINT SINCE HE NEVER MADE ANY MISTAKE IN THE WAY
AND MANNER HE PROSECUTED A WAR THAT COST THE LIVES OF OVER TWO MILLION

OF VICTORY, HE STILL NEEDS TO PRAY FOR HIS NIGERIA WHERE INEQUITY,
      INJUSTICE AND CORRUPTION REIGN SUPREME?.

IT WOULD APPEAR THAT GOWON'S LACK OF UNDERSTANDING OF 'CONFEDERATION'
IN ABURI IN 1967 STILL PLAGUES HIM ON 'GENOCIDE' IN 2012 , HIS PhD IN
      POLITICAL SCIENCE NOTWITHSTANDING.

IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT GOWON WOULD OVERSEE POGROM OF TENS OF
THOUSANDS OF HIS CITIZENS,STARVE 2 MILLION INTERNALLY DISPLACED
CITIZENS OF RELIEF,RENEGE ON ABURI ACCORD,STARVE TWO MILLION CIVILIAN
'REBELS ENEMIES' TO DEATH, REFUSE TO IMPLEMENT THE 'THREE Rs', IMPLEMENT MANY OBNOXIOUS
ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL POLICIES AGAINST A SECTION OF HIS CITIZENS ALL IN
2012 JUST LIKE HE DID BETWEEN 1966 AND 1975.

IS HE NOT A FOOLISH MAN AND A BLOODY LIER FOR PRAYING FOR NIGERIA TO BE GOOD BASED ON EVIL?GOD CAN NEVER HEAR SUCH A PRAYER!

    1. It is a book. Achebe has the right to use his pen whichever way he wants as long as he isn't committing any crime... in this case, he isn't. As far as I'm concerned, writing a book of lies isn't a crime.

  5. All of u r right in ur comments.Am out of 9ja,so i hv nt read achebe's book on d civil war.
If Achebe was 2 write,i expected him 2 write without bias mind. Both d federal n d biafra troops hv their blames.D boundary dat d biafra claimed was never, not, and can not be part of biafra,i.e niger delta and port-harcourt.Dat y,even today, they r nt in anyway part of d east.D war didnt break out bcos of d control of oil field, bcos wat was in d east was coal.
D north came out 2 take revenge 4 d death of d Sadauna and tafawa balewa and 2 return back 2 north,nt 2 rule(gowon was right)Kaduna nzogu killed their ppl, they also came n kill Nrosi, even wit an innocent man, brig Adekunle fajuyi.Am nt writing 2 commend or 2 condem, but d british also shld be blame. Many thanks 2 Obasanjo dat ended d war(i knw d true is bitter)but 4 real,d yorubas shld be praise 4 their role in dat country.
D bottom line is dat 9ja shld move 4ward,get rid of those rogues at d corridor of power and God will c us through.Amen.

These were men who fought to make Nigeria one when your 'heroes' were fighting to tear it apart by their greed and warped ambition.
What you just wrote now actually reveals how ignorant, derailed and confused you are.
I can see the blame now has shifted from Awolowo to Gowon. You better wake up and move on with your life.
The project called Nigeria shall survive by the grace of God despite all the odds.

    1. Really!? i guess that includes you. Dumb ass!! GOD has never created anyone useless unless you consider yourself useless. Like all nations, every country has its dark days, and i dont believe that pointing fingers and playing the blame game will lead to any progress. What i think achebe should be writing about is ways we can eradicate corrupt leaders and appoint qualified individuals who will lead the country forward so that we wont have a repeat of biafra.

    2. You can never go forward, if you keep hiding the past. refusing to accept events of the past.

Take a look at S A Africa, they had to drag their past into an open public enquiry. After, admissions by evil doers and evil deeds, there was reconciliation. they have moved on or on the road to the future.

Nigeria is living in denial, Nigeria and most nigerians, especially some yorubas (observe the terminology - some) and northerners are living in denial because they have been fed nothing but propanda information.

There is no need taking Achebe's view point or Gowon's own stance or Awolowo. You need to listen to Prof Wole Soyinka. he will tell you what happened prior, during and after the war. he will tell you who played what role. he will tell you why the nigerian authorities wanted him dead because he spoke out against the evil they were perpetrating, the genocide and ethnic cleansing they were carrying out.

He did not fight with any side, but because of his honesty, the Nigerian authorites wnated to shut him up.

Nigerian can not move forward, no solution can move nigeria forward, until it stops living in denial and accept its past. teach the lessons of the past to the current and future generation.

If such lesson was taught in classes, maybe the evil of boko haram will not be here today terrorising your great nigeria. if these lessons were taught, maybe Gowon's own home land Jos, will not an epicentre for sectarian and tribal clashes every day. But because they choose to hide and deny the past, it is here today biting their sorry assess.

You can run but you can't hide. Soon all the idiots will be gone and the atrocities they committed will still be here to hunt nigeria and because there is a lot of ignorant people believing that Igbos declared war on nigeria. Nigeria will continue to live in the past

I think d author of this problem is d system of education in 9ja.I c no reason y d ministry of education could not make 9ja history a must at all level, then d true story will come out.All of u shld go n read d history of 9ja during d colonial rule 2 d time of independent,
what causes d war after d independent, who r d ppl dat fought 2 liberate 9ja,which tribe deserves 2 rule 9ja due 2 their selfless sacrifices n r still sacrificing til 2day bcos they r accommodating, which other tribes could not, dats y 9ja is moving at snail speed,if we could accommodate each other we will be able 2 tolerate n accept each other d way we are.Let all d affected tribes learn frm past mistakes n move on.

  16. You know that there is something wrong with the world when Gowon - the great murderer, the great child killer, the killer of generations, Gowon - a man who should be tried at the Hague with Charles Taylor, Radovan Karadzic for war crimes and crimes against humanity accuses the great Professor Achebe of writing a book out of ignorance. Gowon and his lot really have mouth to talk. They knew what they did and to make sure that generations never find out, they banned the teaching of what happened prior, during and after the Biafran war in Nigerian schools. So when People like Achebe write about it, they can open their dirty mouth and talk rubbish

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't have much to say. Gowon can say anything but he cannot silent the truth. It breaks my heart when people of plateau state allowed their place to be over-ran by animals.
