Why Supreme Court Sacked These Five Governors

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Dahiru Musdapher and six of his colleagues, all justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria  on Friday unanimously agreed that the controversial elongation of the tenure of five state governors was illegal.

Delivering the lead judgement, Justice Walter Samuel asserted that...
to allow the governors to spend more than the four years stipulated by the law of the land would lead to absurdity and abuse of the country's constitution.

The judgement affirmed that the governors namely Alhaji Ibrahim Idris (Kogi), Aliyu Wammako (Sokoto), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Timipre Sylva (Bayelsa) were not entitled to stay in office beyond May 29, 20011.

The court further held that the intention of the framers of Nigeria's Constitution was that no Governor (or President) should spend more than four years tenure in office except he/she was re-elected for another four-year tenure.

At the moment, most of the states are peaceful as the sacked governors have pleaded with their supporters remain calm, but same is not the situation in Kogi State. Two governors were sworn-in by two different authorities in the state capital.

However, only the Speaker of the State House of Assembly has received the backing of the authorities in Abuja. More updates coming as the events unfold...

  2. The Supreme court is also not helping matters in this country. Why wait this long before passing judgement on such a sensitive issue?

  7. The judgement might be a calculated attempt by GEJ to stripe Bayelsa state Gov of power so that he can deal wt him more. Justice delay is denied.
