Corruption is Killing the Potentials of Nigerians -US

Corruption has been identified as a key element hindering Nigeria from attaining its full potential by the United States Consul General in Nigeria, Jeffery Hawkins.

Hawkins, who described the people of Nigeria as those with “phenomenal potential,” said stemming corruption was fundamental to the country’s prosperity and economic development.

Hawkins said, “The potential of the people of Nigeria is absolutely phenomenal; Nigerians are forward looking with a whole lot of entrepreneurial expertise, but this potential is not being harnessed because of the potential risk element of corruption in the polity, especially in the power sector.

“Corruption is a Nigerian problem and it does not only have its impact on Nigerians because there are also American companies here. Besides, we have over $5bn investment in Nigeria. Without addressing this issue of corruption, we are not likely to see this country get to where it should be."

He spoke during a courtesy visit to the corporate headquarters of The Punch in Lagos on Wednesday.

  4. Unfortunately, the government is made up of the people, so you can't lay blame on the government alone. Take responsibility, and end corruption as a people. It's sad, but as an American when people in the US joke about someone scamming, they always make a joke referencing Nigerians. In fact, just last night an oyinbo was showing me an email conversation she was having with some person trying to sale her something, and her first remark was "it's probably some Nigerian scam". She had no proof of that, but that is the perception. I've heard others say it too. If you Google Nigeria, the first things that will come up in the search bar are fraud things. Nigerians are becoming a joke to the rest of the world and it is sad because all of the accomplishments of people around the world excelling in academia and business get overshadowed by this reputation. You once had such potential.

    1. If you think the problems of this country is about a certain tribe then I am very sorry for you. It means you are myopic in your outlook and view of the Nigerian situation as well as ignorant of the facts and recorded details that exists everywhere. I will advise you equip yourself with knowledge - it is a very important tool for success in life.
