26yrs Old Nigerian Sentenced To Death For Stealing N1,705

This is unbelievable but it has happened LIVE in our country, Nigeria. A Jos High Court on Thursday, 21 June 2012, sentenced a 26-year-old man, Obinah John, to death by hanging for stealing the sum of One Thousand, Seven Hundred and Five Naira ( N1,705) cash from one Dorothy Olaniyi.

Olufamous.com gathered that Obinah, now on death row, was also accused of stealing two rolls of peak milk sachets, valued at N400 from the same Dorothy.

The prosecution counsel, Mr G.D. Fwonyon, who is the deputy director, Public Prosecution in Plateau State had told the court that Obinah, in company with an accomplice identified as John, now at large, robbed the Dorothy on November 18, 2005 in her shop at Gada Biu, Jos, at gunpoint.

The Public Prosecutor told the judge point-blank that since Obinah used a gun to rob Olaniyi, he had committed a criminal offence punishable with death by hanging.

Olufamous.com gathered that Obinah's counsel, Mr. Tobechukwu Kekemeke tried all he could to convince the judge otherwise, but his pleas fell on deaf ears. He was said to have accused the police of “not telling the truth about the gun” said to have been used by Obinah.

Mr. Kekemeke pointed out that the police presented three statements, with only the last indicating a confession by the accused that he used a gun against the victim. He further argued that the prosecution had failed to prove to the court that the accused actually used a gun to commit the act.

But in a 60-page judgment, Justice Yargata Nimpa said the evidence before her showed that the accused, Obinah, committed the offence and thus sentenced him to death by hanging.

  23. Just because of a mere one thousand, seven hundred and five naira,is that why the judge want to take a poor man life, if truly Nigeria want to clean corruption in Nigeria, i think they should start from people packing our money into their pocket and their so call cap.

  24. The lesson here is don't go and steal N1000 with a gun and expect to go free because you heard people in govt and stealing N1000 Trillion are are going scot free. Its the law and it has to be upheld. If his defense team thinking all the facts were not properly considered there is such thing as an appeal. No need being emotional. That some crazy politician escaped justice is no excuse to let an petty thief go free. Sad but true

THE JUDGE DOES NOT MERIT THAT POSITION, RATHER TO HANDLE SUCH A CHEAP CASE. HOW CAN SHE SENTENCE OBINA TO DEATH JUST BECAUSE OF #1,705? THIS IS INJUSTICE. I GUESS THE PROSECUTOR IS EVEN DATING THE DOROTHY. OBINA DESERVE #10,000 FINE OR 3MONTHS IN PRISONMENT THAN DEATH SENTENCE. THAT JUDGE NEED MORE TRAINING. BANKOLE WHO STOLE BILLION IS WALKIN FREELY IN THE SOCIETY TODAY. NIGERIANS, I CALL FOR A REVOLUTION, DO YOU ACCEPT THAT?

  29. Dat judge must b insane. He needs to b taken to a psychiatry, maybe he bribed his way tru law school. Idiot..

  30. This is just the tip of the ice burge! In Plateau alot of injustice is happening bcos they treat every other person aside from INDEGINES as enemies. It is not suprising that a drunkard judge after a pot of morning burkutu( local beer) can pass such a trash as sentence. Its a pity Obinnah!

  31. to me if this young man must die then iyabo obasonjo, ete, farouk, femi otedola, dangote and many other the need to kill all of them, why nigeria we treat comon man in hard way and we treat the rich men case very easy, this is total injustice

  32. The penal code is clear.Once you are armed and dispose someon, its armrobbery punishable by death alone.what you stole is immaterial.its a right judgement though appealable.I think we can equally interprete pen as offensive weapon and sentence those criminals to death too.
